For many years the captaincy of Arsenal football club had an air of disaster attached to it. Most football fans remember the famous incident where Granit Xhaka responded to jeers from the home fans by swearing at the supporters and was subsequently stripped of the captaincy in 2019. But for the last two decades the Gunners captaincy has bounced from one calamity to another. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang took the armband off of Xhaka, but then left it in unharmonious circumstances himself just two years later after a big falling out with the manager. Before that it was Laurent Koscielny, who left the club in bitter fashion himself. Preceding him, Per Mertesacker and Thomas Vermaelen, who although boasted decent leadership skills, were rarely in the starting line up.

Not only is London widely known as one of the business and tourist capitals of the world, it is a city brimming with football. A metropolis in love with the beautiful game. Currently seven of the 20 teams that make up the Premier League reside from the UK’s capital city. On a good day, within three hours of driving you could visit all seven different stadiums of the London clubs currently in the English top-flight. Just four miles separate Arsenal and Tottenham. There’s just 1.7 miles between Chelsea and Fulham. From this naturally comes great rivalry between the London clubs. Arsenal have taken on both Chelsea and Tottenham in the last week, and there's another huge London derby this Thursday, as Spurs go to Stamford Bridge.

This Sunday one of the historically biggest Premier League fixtures takes place. Arsenal go to Old Trafford looking to preserve their own title aspirations. In years gone by it’s not been a happy hunting ground for the Gunners - just one Premier League win in 17 years. But this season, it’s also not really been a happy hunting ground for Erik ten Hag's Manchester United either. The Red Devils would be ninth in the table from just home games this season and have already equalled their worst loss tally in a Premier League season and are on course for their worst ever points total and goals conceded record. Going to Old Trafford this season hasn’t quite been the daunting task of old.

It’s crunch time in the Premier League. This Sunday marks the final games of the season. Both Manchester City and Arsenal can still win the title, but the Gunners will need Pep Guardiola’s team to drop points at home to West Ham, whilst beating Everton at the Emirates themselves. Aston Villa have already now wrapped up the fourth Champions League spot, whilst Luton are all but relegated. The Hatters would need to win, hope Nottingham Forest lose, and would need a 12 goal difference swing.

This Sunday a memorable Premier League season comes to an end. There have been more goals than ever before with 1209 goals already scored this campaign. The title race will go down to the last day between Manchester City and Arsenal, but the Gunners would need to beat Everton at the Emirates, and hope Pep Guardiola’s team drop points at home to West Ham. The most likely outcome would be a win for both sides, which would leave Mikel Arteta’s side on 89 points but trophy-less.
